Cultivating Body Awareness: A Proprioception Workshop
If you've ever wondered what your yoga teacher means when they say "sense your body" or "notice sensations in your feet", then this is the workshop for you!
Proprioception is sometimes described as our "sixth sense". It is the ability to sense our body in space and to determine the appropriate amount of force or speed needed to perform an action.
Proprioception is necessary for us to stand upright, walk, or do just about anything with our bodies. For example, when walking, our central nervous system is continuously monitoring our posture and adjusting muscle activity as needed to provide balance so that we don't fall over.
Proprioception is what allows us to learn to walk in complete darkness without losing balance. Without a functioning proprioceptive system, it would be impossible to drive an automobile because a you would not be able to steer or use the pedals while looking at the road ahead; you would not be able to type without looking at your hands, or even walk without watching where you put their feet.
Learn how to strengthen your proprioception and increase your body awareness.
Go Within.
During this interactive workshop, we will play with a number of proprioceptive exercises. We will perform tasks such as touching our nose while our eyes are closed, or pouring water into a cup while blindfolded. The workshop will include an hour-long blindfolded yoga class. After the class, we will have time to share our experience.
The blindfolded yoga class will help cultivate awareness of the body, breath, emotions, and thoughts. When sight is removed from the practice, there is no choice but to turn inward and heighten your other senses. Practicing yoga blindfolded helps you feel a pose from the inside out and move intuitively, keeping your focus on yourself. And because you’re blindfolded, you’re not competing with anyone in class and really tuning into yourself without judgment.
Blindfolds will be provided, or you can bring your own. Bring a mat if you have one. We have a few to lend. 2 Continuing Education hours available through Yoga Alliance for yoga teachers. Space is limited to the first 10 people to reserve their spot.
